Adam is Everyman, pulled from the waters of baptism, concrete and universal, led by the fire of day by night, and the cloud of night by day. The whole expression of Adam is that of tense power and inward concentration, as if seeking to grasp and find union with that presence echoing through him from the tympanum. The tympanum and Adam resonate with one another and within one another as of flesh and spirit.
